State Academic Mariinsky theatre is named in honor of empress Maria, Alexander II’s spouse. It was opened on October 2, 1860 and played important role in opera and ballet art development. Here the first Russian operas were staged. Outstanding singers performed on the stage of the theatre, such as F. Shalyapin, F. Stravinsky, as well as ballet soloists M.Kshesinskaya, V.Nizhinsky, A.Pavlova and others.
